This authentic German Eastern Front Medal (Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42) is a fine example of the award issued to Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS personnel who served in the brutal conditions of the Russian winter campaign. Commonly referred to as the “Ostmedaille” or “Winter Battle Medal”, it was instituted on May 26, 1942, to recognize those who endured the extreme cold and harsh combat of the Eastern Front during Operation Barbarossa.

This medal remains in very good condition, retaining its original detail. It features a zinc-based construction with a darkened finish, showcasing the distinctive design: the Wehrmacht eagle clutching a swastika above a crossed sword and laurel wreath, symbolizing the struggle and sacrifice of German forces. The reverse is inscribed with “Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42”, commemorating the campaign. The medal is complete with its original or period-correct ribbon, displaying the red, black, and white color scheme—representing the bloodshed, the harsh winter, and the German forces.

The Eastern Front Medal was widely awarded, with over 3 million issued, yet finding well-preserved examples today is becoming increasingly difficult. This piece is a must-have for collectors of WWII German militaria, providing a tangible link to one of the most infamous and challenging campaigns of the war.

A fantastic addition to any serious collection of Third Reich awards and decorations.
