This WWII German Condor Legion Black Wound Badge is a rare and highly sought-after example of the award originally instituted on May 22, 1939, to honor German personnel wounded while serving in the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The Condor Legion was a unit composed of Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht volunteers who supported General Francisco Franco’s Nationalist forces, providing crucial air and ground assistance. The experience gained in Spain would later influence Germany’s military strategies in World War II.
The design features a distinctive M16-style German helmet, embossed with a swastika, positioned above two crossed swords—a symbol of military sacrifice and valor. Encased within a laurel and oak leaf wreath, this variation is unique to the Condor Legion, distinguishing it from the standard 1939 Wound Badge. The reverse side retains its original pin and clasp, ensuring authenticity.
Awarded in three grades—black, silver, and gold—the black grade, as seen here, was presented to those who had suffered one or two wounds in combat. Crafted from blackened brass, early examples had a higher-quality finish compared to later wartime issues. This example remains in very good condition, with the blackened surface well-preserved and the detailing crisp, a true testament to its era.
The Condor Legion Wound Badge is significantly rarer than its WWII counterpart, as it was produced in much smaller numbers. Worn on the left breast pocket, it was a mark of distinction among German troops who had seen action in Spain. This exceptional and historically significant piece is a must-have for collectors of Third Reich militaria, offering a rare glimpse into the German military’s early combat experience before the onset of World War II.
