This original German World War II Luftwaffe Air Gunner and Flight Engineer Badge remains in very good condition, retaining much of its original silver wash on both the front and rear. Notably, there is some wear on the high points of the eagle, indicative of its age and use. The reverse side bears the maker’s mark “C.E. Juncker Berlin SW68,” identifying it as a product of the renowned Berlin-based manufacturer C.E. Juncker.
The Luftwaffe Air Gunner and Flight Engineer Badge (Fliegerschützenabzeichen für Bordmechaniker und Bordschützen) was instituted on June 22, 1942. This military decoration was awarded to Luftwaffe personnel, specifically air gunners, flight engineers, and mechanics, who completed two months of training or participated in five operational flights. The badge was worn on the lower part of the left breast side of the tunic, below the Iron Cross.
The badge features an oval-shaped silver-plated wreath, with the right side composed of laurel leaves and the left side of oak leaves, encasing a national eagle in flight clutching two crossed lightning bolts. This design symbolizes the technical expertise and crucial roles played by aircrew in maintaining the operational effectiveness of the Luftwaffe’s aircraft. Initially crafted from aluminum, the badge’s construction materials shifted to metal alloys as the war progressed due to material shortages.
This badge not only signifies the technical skills and bravery of its recipients but also serves as a tangible piece of World War II history, reflecting the rigorous standards and traditions of the Luftwaffe.
